João Sousa Brand presents the "Sociedade" collection at the Mostra Nacional de Jovens Criadores 2024 by Gerador in Santa Maria da Feira

Updated: Dec 19, 2024

Last Sunday, December 8th, fashion designer João Sousa participated in the prestigious "Mostra Nacional de Jovens Criadores 2024", organized by Gerador. This annual competition is a platform that highlights and promotes young talent in fifteen creative fields, offering them the opportunity to showcase their work to a wider audience and renowned professionals.

Among the many participants, João Sousa stood out in the fashion category, being one of the eight selected to present his collection. The selection was carried out by a national jury composed by Eduarda Abbondanza, president of ModaLisboa, and Dino Alves, one of the most innovative Portuguese fashion designers.

The collection presented by João Sousa, entitled "Sociedade", is a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April, reflecting the struggle and transformation of Portuguese society over the last five decades. In five meticulously designed outfits, the designer translated profound and historical themes into contemporary and conceptual fashion.

The abstract patterns present in the pieces symbolize different aspects of the pre-revolutionary era: the surveillance of the PIDE, the trials of those who opposed the Salazar regime, and the bravery of the military who faced repression. The colors black, red and white were chosen with a clear purpose, representing, respectively, oppression, revolution and the new page of freedom that opened with the 25th of April.

In addition to the symbolism of colors and prints, the pieces combine elements of military uniforms with the boldness of women's fashion. The fuxico details, which refer to the carnation, an iconic symbol of the Carnation Revolution, add a touch of tradition and resistance to the set. The combination of these elements results in a collection that is both a tribute to the past and a statement of style and innovation.

João Sousa not only demonstrated a deep understanding of Portuguese history, but also the ability to transform that understanding into art.
